There have been a number of studies since the 1970’s to answer the question as to whether natural absorb better than synthetic. After all, the synthetic supplements can be mass produced and are typically much cheaper. In general, the studies have shown there is little difference in the absorption rate.
But that’s not the full story.
Not all vitamins and minerals are created equal. There’s a secret the pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to know.
How much the body absorbs is important. And more important is what the body does with the substances once it has them. A growing body of evidence is forming for the case of natural health supplements.
From a positive angle, one study of vitamin E, the natural forms were twice as potent as the synthetic. Another study confirms the natural vitamin A antioxidant effect is much higher than synthetic form.
And from the negative, a study revealed the toxic effects of too much vitamin D were found to be far less with the natural form than the synthetic.
The goodness is greater and the downside is lessened with natural substances.
We don’t deny there is a role for synthetic supplements. For example where there is no natural alternative, where the costs are far too high, or where the distribution of natural substances is impossible, then synthetic is better than nothing. Fortunately most of us don’t face those obstacles. Our greatest obstacle is the advertising by companies with an eye on their share price.
Please remember, more is not necessarily better. Even natural products can cause harm if taken to excess. Natural health supplements are important for laying a strong foundation for a healthy body. As too is a healthy diet and exercise. And let’s not forget love, laughter and friends. It’s all about balance.
