Hi Everyone,
I won’t be out in the garden today, brrrr, however to keep you up to date, I saw the first Cauliflower florets emerge so we will be having lots of Cauliflower soup and Cauliflower bake over the winter to look forward to!
The pumpkins are growing and getting close to harvesting, zucchinis, tomatoes and lettuce are still going strong and I made two batches of tomato relish this month to be savoured throughout the colder months to come!
As the weather changes, I’m starting to journal again and have gone back to reading about nutrition which I am so passionate about!
When I completed my course in Health and Nutrition many years ago, I was fascinated by the ways in which certain herbs and minerals were essential to the human body and optimal health.
I am particularly fascinated by Iodine at the moment and am reading a book by Dr David Derry called Breast Cancer and Iodine.
He proposes that Iodine appears to be the least understood important element making up the body fluids and cells of humans. He says that the benefits of Iodine in the body have not been properly researched due to lack of research funds other than that iodine makes thyroid hormone and it serves as an excellent antiseptic.
Dr Derry proposes primarily that iodine is the trigger mechanism for apoptosis (the process of the natural death of cells) and the main surveillance mechanism for abnormal cells in the body. Iodine triggers the death of cells which are abnormal or which have normal programmed death as part of their life cycle. This is part of a general thesis that iodine and thyroid hormone act as a team to provide a constant surveillance against abnormal cell development, chemicals that are carcinogenic and the spread of cancer cells within the body.
Dr Derry also says that Iodine protects against abnormal growth of bacteria in the stomach (helicobacter pylori is the most clinically significant). Iodine can coat incoming allergic proteins to make them non-allergic, which likely also applies to the internal equivalent called autoimmune disease. So adequate Iodine in the body not only prevents the chances of getting an auto immune disease but allows cancer cells to destroy themselves through this process of APOPTOSIS!
Very impressive mineral indeed!!
Iodine in the stomach also deactivates all biological and most chemical poisons. Dr Derry confirms what we already know, that significant iodine concentrations occur in seaweed! He continues to say that Japan is extraordinary in that it has the lowest rates of cervical cancer in the world. Japanese women, who consume the highest amounts of iodine per woman in the world, have the lowest rate of stillbirth and perinatal and infant mortality. Also, among the folklore of Japanese mothers is the notion that seaweed will prevent cancer. The Japanese have one of the lowest breast cancer, prostate cancer and thyroid cancer rates and only lately have had a small increase in the breast cancer rates due to the Westernisation of their diet.
So, a healthy diet of organic, fresh food and vegetables is so vital to radiant health. However, at a time when soils are still depleted and due to today’s farming practices, we still MUST SUPPLEMENT.
I love sharing information about health and believe in administering preventative medicine….
If you can take on board the possibility that an increased susceptibility to cancer occurs in those with a poor thyroid function, then why wouldn’t you take some steps to maintain a good level of thyroid activity by ensuring iodine is available in the right quantities in your body…especially in midlife when there is a natural tendency for iodine levels to fall. It’s just a no-brainer!
So ….’If it is to be, it is up to me’.
Stay warm!
In gratitude,
